چکیده

Three distinct groups of eclogites (low-Mg–Ti eclogites, high-Ti eclogites and Mg-rich eclogites) and ultramafic rocks from the depth interval of 100–680 m of the Chinese Continental Scientific Drill Hole were studied. The lowMg#s (=100⁎molar Mg/(Mg+Fe)) (81–84%) and low Ni (1150–1220 ppm) and high Fe2O3 total (13–15 wt.%) contents of ultramafic rocks suggest a cumulate origin. Mgrich eclogites showmiddle and heavy REE enrichments, which could not be produced by metamorphic growth of garnet. Instead, if the rocks formed from a light REE enriched magma, there may be an igneous precursor for some garnets in their protolith. Alternatively, perhaps they formed from a light REE depleted magma without garnet. The high-Ti eclogites are characterized by unusually high Fe2O3 total contents (up to 24.5 wt.%) and decoupling of high TiO2 from low Nb and Ta contents. These features cannot be produced by concentration of rutile during UHP metamorphism (even for samples with TiO2N4 wt.%) of high-Ti basalts, but could be attributed to crystal fractionation of titanomagnetite (for those with TiO2b∼4 wt.%) or titanomagnetite+ ilmenite (for those with TiO2N∼4 wt.%). Thus, we suggest that protoliths of the high-Ti eclogites were titanomagnetite/ilmenite-rich gabbroic cumulates. As a whole, the lowMg–Ti eclogites are geochemically complementary to the high-Ti eclogites, Mg-rich eclogites and ultramafic rocks, and could be metamorphic products of gabbroic/dioritic cumulates formed by high degree crystal fractionation. All these observations suggest that parental materials of the ultramafic rock-eclogite assemblage could represent a complete sequence of fractional crystallization of tholeiitic or picritic magmas at intermediate to high pressure, which were later carried to ultrahigh-pressure conditions during a continental collision event. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Metamorphic P–T conditions and thermal structure of Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling main hole eclogites: Fe–Mg partitioning thermometer vs. Zr-in-rutile thermometer

Core rocks recovered from the main hole (5158 m deep) of the Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling (CCSD-MH) project, southern Sulu UHP terrane, east-central China, consist of eclogites, various gneisses and minor metaperidotite cumulates; this lithological section underwent subduction-zone UHP metamorphism. Coesite-bearing eclogites are mainly present between the depths of 100–2000 m, but be...

Characteristic thermal regimes of plate tectonics and their metamorphic imprint throughout Earth history: When did Earth fi rst adopt a plate tectonics mode of behavior?

Where plates converge, one-sided subduction generates two contrasting thermal environments in the subduction zone (low dT/dP) and in the arc and subduction zone backarc or orogenic hinterland (high dT/dP). This duality of thermal regimes is the hallmark of modern plate tectonics, which is imprinted in the ancient rock record as penecontemporaneous metamorphic belts of two contrasting types, one...

Petrography and geochemistry of the Kahrizbeyg intrusion, southwest of Zanjan

The Kahrizbeyg pluton is located northwest of Iran in Central Iran zone. It is emplaced into the Cretaceous limestones in which contact metamorphism has happened. Meanwhile, rock fragments of this pluton are found in conglomerate units of Early Oligocene Lower Red Formation. Therefore, the relative age of pluton is between Cretaceous and Oligocene. The Kahrizbeyg pluton consists of granite and ...

Metamorphism in the Ross orogen and its bearing on Gondwana margin tectonics

The Ross orogen of Antarctica is one of Earth’s great Phanerozoic mountain belts. It is thought from igneous geochemistry, deformation patterns, and sedimentation history to be the result of late Neoproterozoic and early Paleozoic plate-margin convergence between paleo-Pacifi c oceanic lithosphere and continental lithosphere represented by the composite East Antarctic shield. Convergence along ...

Petrology and Geochemistry of the Eocene Volcanic Rocks in the West of Sechangi, Lut Block

The Eocene volcanic rocks exposed in the NW Sechangi area of Lut block, include pyroclastic deposits and lavas. These volcanic rocks are basalt, basaltic andesite, andesite, andesite-trachyandesite, trachydacite, dacite and rhyolite-ignimbrite in composition. Based on our field observations, the volcanic rocks erupted in four stages in the aquous to subaerial environments. The volcanic rocks ar...
